Habitat
Chinese red pikas inhabit alpine meadows and rocky slopes in the high mountains of western China, typically at elevations above 3,000 meters. They prefer areas with abundant rocks for burrows and nearby grasses for food, avoiding dense forests or lowlands.
Diet
Chinese red pikas primarily consume grasses, herbs, and other green vegetation, which they forage during daylight hours. They exhibit haymaking behavior, collecting and drying plants to store for winter sustenance. Feeding is most active in the early morning and late afternoon to avoid predators.
Behavior
Chinese red pikas are diurnal and live in loose colonies within rocky habitats, where they establish small territories around their burrows. They communicate with high-pitched alarm calls to warn of danger and are agile climbers, spending much time foraging or sunbathing on rocks. They are generally solitary outside of breeding season but may form groups for mutual protection.
Conservation Status
The IUCN classifies the Chinese red pika as Vulnerable, with populations declining due to habitat loss from overgrazing, climate change, and infrastructure development. Major threats include predation by domestic animals and fragmentation of alpine meadows.
