Habitat

This fish inhabits deep pelagic waters of the tropical and subtropical Atlantic Ocean, typically from the surface down to about 200 meters. It prefers open ocean environments near continental shelves and around islands, such as the Bahamas and the Yucatan Peninsula, avoiding shallow coastal areas.

Diet

Channel scabbardfish primarily feed on smaller fish, squid, and crustaceans, using their sharp teeth to capture prey. They are nocturnal hunters, actively foraging in deeper waters at night when their prey is more abundant. Feeding behavior involves swift, ambush-style attacks in the open ocean.

Behavior

Channel scabbardfish are solitary and nomadic, often undertaking vertical migrations in the water column to follow prey or avoid predators. They are primarily nocturnal, remaining deeper during the day and rising to shallower depths at night. This species exhibits fast swimming capabilities and is not known for territorial behavior.

Conservation Status

Listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
