Habitat
This subspecies inhabits the steppes, semi-deserts, and rocky mountainous regions of Central Asia, including parts of Mongolia, China, and Russia. They prefer areas with sparse vegetation and abundant rock crevices for shelter, typically at elevations from 1,500 to 5,000 meters. These environments offer prey and protection from extreme weather.
Diet
The Central Pallas' cat primarily feeds on small mammals like pikas and voles, as well as birds, insects, and occasionally reptiles. It hunts solitarily, often ambushing prey from cover, and is most active at dawn and dusk. Feeding behavior includes caching excess food in dens for later consumption.
Behavior
Central Pallas' cats are solitary and territorial, marking their ranges with scent and avoiding direct confrontations. They are primarily nocturnal or crepuscular, spending the day in dens among rocks to avoid predators and harsh weather. Notable behaviors include a low, stealthy hunting style and minimal vocalization, relying on camouflage for survival.
Conservation Status
The Pallas' cat is listed as Near Threatened by the IUCN, with populations declining due to habitat loss from overgrazing and mining, as well as poaching and retaliatory killings by herders.
