Habitat

This species primarily inhabits lowland rainforests and swamp forests in Central Africa, such as in the Democratic Republic of Congo and parts of the Republic of Congo. They prefer dense canopy cover at elevations up to 1,000 meters for foraging and protection from predators.

Diet

The Central African red colobus mainly consumes leaves, fruits, seeds, and flowers from various trees, with a particular preference for young leaves and unripe fruits. They feed in social groups during the day, spending several hours foraging in the canopy to meet their high-fiber dietary needs.

Behavior

They live in multi-male, multi-female troops of 20-80 individuals, exhibiting strong social bonds through grooming and vocal communication. These monkeys are diurnal and arboreal, spending most of their time leaping between trees, and they use alarm calls to warn of predators. Territorial behavior involves defending their home range from neighboring groups.

Conservation Status

The IUCN status is Endangered, with populations declining due to habitat loss from deforestation and hunting for bushmeat.
