Habitat

This species primarily inhabits tropical rainforests, including lowland and montane forests on the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia. It prefers areas with dense vegetation and proximity to water sources, adapting to both primary forests and secondary growth.

Diet

The Celebes warty pig is omnivorous, feeding on fruits, roots, tubers, insects, and small vertebrates like lizards. It forages on the forest floor, often at night or dawn, using its snout to dig for food.

Behavior

Celebes warty pigs live in small family groups led by a dominant male, are primarily nocturnal or crepuscular to avoid predators, and exhibit territorial behavior with males marking areas with scent. They are generally wary and quick to flee from threats, communicating through grunts and squeals.

Conservation Status

The IUCN status is Vulnerable, with populations declining due to habitat loss from deforestation and hunting pressure. Major threats include fragmentation of forest habitats and human encroachment.
