Geographic range is limited to the island of Sulawesi and nearby smaller islands.
Diet
The Celebes rusa deer feeds mainly on grasses, leaves, fruits, and browse from shrubs and trees. It exhibits grazing and browsing behavior, typically feeding during dawn and dusk to avoid predators. In drier periods, it may rely more on fruits and fallen vegetation for sustenance.
Behavior
Celebes rusa deer are primarily crepuscular, active during dawn and dusk, and form small herds of 5-10 individuals led by a dominant male. Males are territorial and mark their areas with scent glands, engaging in rutting behaviors during mating season. They are generally cautious and alert, using alarm calls to warn the group of potential threats.
Conservation Status
The Celebes rusa deer is classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN due to habitat loss from deforestation and hunting pressure. Population trends are decreasing, with major threats including human encroachment and fragmentation of forest habitats.
