Habitat
This species primarily inhabits tropical rainforests on the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia, including both lowland and montane forests up to 2,000 meters. They prefer areas with dense vegetation for cover and food sources, and can adapt to secondary forests but are less common in heavily disturbed areas.
Diet
Celebes dwarf squirrels mainly feed on fruits, seeds, and nuts from trees in their habitat, supplemented by insects and occasionally bird eggs. They forage actively during the day, often climbing trees to access food, and may cache excess food for later use.
Behavior
These squirrels are diurnal and primarily arboreal, spending most of their time in trees where they are agile climbers. They are generally solitary or found in pairs, exhibiting territorial behavior by marking trees with scent glands. Notable behaviors include rapid chattering calls to communicate alarm and a habit of leaping between branches.
Conservation Status
The IUCN classifies the Celebes dwarf squirrel as Least Concern, though its population is suspected to be decreasing due to habitat loss from deforestation and agriculture.
