Habitat
This species inhabits sandy or muddy bottoms on continental shelves in the Eastern Pacific, from shallow coastal waters down to about 200 meters depth. It prefers temperate regions along the coastlines of California, Oregon, Washington, and northern Mexico. Geographic preferences include bays, estuaries, and open ocean floors where prey is abundant.
Diet
The California skate primarily feeds on bottom-dwelling invertebrates such as crabs, shrimp, and polychaete worms, along with small fishes. It uses its pectoral fins to stir up sediment and uncover prey, often foraging at night on the seafloor. Feeding behavior is opportunistic, taking advantage of available food sources in its benthic environment.
Behavior
California skates are generally solitary and benthic, spending much of their time buried in sand or mud to ambush prey. They are primarily nocturnal, emerging at night to feed, and exhibit minimal territorial behavior except during mating. These skates are known for their ability to glide gracefully over the seafloor and can perform quick bursts of movement to evade threats.
Conservation Status
Listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
