Overview
Out of all the Peakcok Basee species, They have the greatest variation in color. They are yellowish green, with three dark, yellow-fringed blotches along the lateral midsection, or bars that typically fade in fish larger than three or four pounds. A smaller “eyespot” spot, characteristic of all pavónes,” appears at the beginning of the caudal fin. The iris of the eye is frequently deep reddish in color. They are also distinguished by the absence of black markings on the opercula.

Habitat
Butterfly Peacock Bass primarily inhabit freshwater rivers, lakes, and reservoirs in tropical regions of northern South America, such as the Amazon basin. They prefer warm waters with temperatures around 24-30°C and areas with abundant cover like submerged logs, rocks, or vegetation for hiding and ambushing prey. In introduced locations like Florida or Hawaii, they adapt to similar warm, freshwater environments with structure.
Diet
Butterfly Peacock Bass are carnivorous predators that mainly feed on smaller fish, such as minnows and other baitfish, as well as crustaceans and insects. They employ an ambush feeding strategy, hiding in cover and striking quickly at prey, which makes them active hunters during daylight hours. Feeding peaks in the morning and late afternoon when prey is most abundant.
Behavior
Butterfly Peacock Bass are territorial and aggressive, particularly during spawning seasons when they defend nesting sites vigorously. They are diurnal, most active during the day, and often solitary or in small groups, using cover to ambush prey. In introduced areas, they can disrupt local ecosystems by outcompeting native species due to their predatory nature.
Fishing
They have powerful, laterally compressed body and aggressive temperament make it pound for pound one of the hardest fish to handle on light tackle, but because of the size, light spinning, bait casting, or fly fishing outfits are recommended. Small fishes such as shiners or threadfin shad are the best bait, but light spinning lures and surface lures that resemble small fish are also highly effective. This particular specie has rapidly become one of the most popular game fish in the areas where it has been introduced. It's more than just a fighter. It is not only beautifully colored but tasty as as well.
