Habitat

This species inhabits pelagic waters of the open ocean, typically in temperate and subantarctic regions at depths of 100 to 500 meters. It prefers areas with high productivity, such as upwelling zones in the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans.

Diet

Butterfly kingfish primarily feed on smaller fish like lanternfish and myctophids, as well as squid and occasionally crustaceans. They are active predators that hunt in midwater using ambush tactics, with feeding most common during daylight hours when prey is abundant.

Behavior

Butterfly kingfish are typically solitary or form loose schools, exhibiting migratory patterns to follow food sources across vast oceanic areas. They are fast swimmers capable of deep dives and show territorial behavior around feeding grounds, but they generally avoid human interaction.

Conservation Status

Listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
