Habitat
This species primarily inhabits dry savannas, woodlands, and rocky outcrops in East Africa, including countries like Kenya, Tanzania, and Ethiopia. It prefers areas with dense vegetation for cover and proximity to water sources, avoiding dense forests or high-altitude regions.
Diet
The bushy-tailed mongoose feeds mainly on small rodents, insects, birds, and reptiles, often hunting at night. It also consumes fruits and eggs when available, using its keen sense of smell to locate prey in burrows or under rocks. Feeding typically occurs nocturnally to avoid predators.
Behavior
Bushy-tailed mongooses are primarily nocturnal and solitary, though they may form pairs during mating season. They are territorial, marking their areas with scent glands and using vocalizations to communicate. They are agile climbers and diggers, often creating burrows for shelter.
Conservation Status
The IUCN status of the bushy-tailed mongoose is Least Concern, but populations are declining due to habitat loss from agriculture and human settlement. Major threats include fragmentation of their habitats and potential persecution as pests.
