Habitat

They primarily inhabit tropical rainforests and cloud forests in Colombia and Venezuela. These monkeys prefer the upper canopy layers of mature forests, avoiding open areas and lower elevations.

Diet

Brown spider monkeys mainly eat ripe fruits such as figs and bananas, supplemented by leaves, flowers, and occasionally insects. They forage in the treetops during the day, often traveling long distances in search of food sources.

Behavior

They live in fission-fusion societies with groups of 10-30 individuals that split and merge throughout the day. Brown spider monkeys are diurnal and highly arboreal, using brachiation to move swiftly through the canopy, and they communicate with vocalizations and gestures. They are territorial, defending fruit-rich areas with displays of aggression.

Conservation Status

The IUCN status is Endangered, with populations declining due to habitat destruction from deforestation and agriculture. Major threats include hunting and fragmentation of their rainforest habitats.
