Habitat

Brown's pademelon inhabits dense rainforests and montane forests in New Guinea, preferring areas with thick undergrowth and proximity to water sources. They are typically found at elevations between 1,000 and 3,000 meters, avoiding open areas in favor of cover from vegetation.

Diet

Brown's pademelon primarily eats grasses, leaves, fruits, and roots, foraging for these items on the forest floor. They are mostly nocturnal feeders, becoming active at dusk to search for food, and may supplement their diet with fungi during the wet season.

Behavior

Brown's pademelon is primarily solitary or lives in small family groups, being nocturnal and spending the day hidden in dense vegetation. They exhibit territorial behavior, marking areas with scent glands and thumping their hind feet as a warning to intruders. These animals are agile hoppers, using their powerful hind legs to escape threats quickly.

Conservation Status

Brown's pademelon is classified as Near Threatened by the IUCN, with a decreasing population trend due to habitat loss from logging and agriculture. Major threats include hunting by local communities and predation by introduced species.
