Habitat

Brooke's squirrels primarily inhabit tropical rainforests and montane forests on the island of Borneo, often at elevations up to 2,000 meters. They prefer dense vegetation with plenty of trees for climbing and foraging, and are commonly found in both primary and secondary forests.

Diet

Brooke's squirrels feed on a variety of fruits, seeds, nuts, and insects, which they forage from trees and the forest floor. They use their sharp incisors to open hard-shelled items and are most active in feeding during the early morning and late afternoon. Their diet varies seasonally based on food availability in their habitat.

Behavior

Brooke's squirrels are diurnal and arboreal, spending most of their time climbing and foraging in trees, with agile movements to evade threats. They are generally solitary but may form pairs during breeding season, and they mark territories using scent glands. They communicate through vocalizations and tail flicking, showing territorial behavior when defending food sources.

Conservation Status

Brooke's squirrels are classified as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a stable population trend, though they face threats from habitat loss due to deforestation and logging in Borneo.
