Habitat

This species inhabits freshwater streams, rivers, and forested wetlands in the mountainous regions of Borneo, preferring areas with dense vegetation and abundant water sources. It is typically found at elevations between 500 and 2000 meters, avoiding open or dry areas.

Diet

The Bornean water shrew primarily feeds on aquatic insects, small crustaceans, and earthworms, which it hunts by diving into streams or foraging along banks. It is nocturnal, actively searching for food at night using its keen sense of smell and touch. Feeding sessions can last several hours to meet its high metabolic needs.

Behavior

The Bornean water shrew is solitary and territorial, marking its range with scent and aggressively defending it from intruders. It is primarily nocturnal, spending days in burrows near water and nights swimming or foraging. This species exhibits excellent swimming abilities and can remain submerged for up to 30 seconds while hunting.

Conservation Status

The Bornean water shrew is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a stable population trend, though habitat loss from deforestation poses a potential threat. No major conservation efforts are currently in place due to its wide distribution and adaptability.
