Habitat

The Bornean binturong inhabits tropical rainforests on the island of Borneo, including both lowland and montane forests up to 1,500 meters. It prefers dense vegetation with plenty of trees for arboreal living, avoiding open areas. Geographic range is limited to Borneo, particularly in undisturbed primary forests.

Diet

Bornean binturongs are omnivorous, consuming a variety of fruits such as figs and durians, as well as insects, birds, eggs, and small mammals like rodents. They forage primarily at night in the forest canopy, using their prehensile tail for balance while feeding. Their feeding behavior includes stripping fruit from branches and occasionally raiding bird nests.

Behavior

Bornean binturongs are primarily nocturnal and arboreal, spending most of their time in trees where they move slowly and deliberately. They are solitary animals that maintain territories marked by scent glands, interacting mainly during mating. Notable behaviors include emitting loud, growling calls for communication and using their prehensile tail for grasping branches.

Conservation Status

The Bornean binturong is classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN due to habitat loss from deforestation and hunting. Population trends are decreasing, with major threats including logging, agricultural expansion, and the pet trade.
