Habitat
This species inhabits dense tropical rainforests and swampy areas on the islands of Sulawesi, Indonesia, particularly in the Bola Batu region. They prefer proximity to rivers and wetlands for water and food sources, avoiding open areas due to vulnerability to predators.
Diet
Bola Batu babirusas primarily eat fruits, leaves, roots, and invertebrates like earthworms and insects, which they forage by rooting in the soil. They are opportunistic feeders, occasionally consuming small vertebrates, and are most active during dawn and dusk when they search for food.
Behavior
These babirusas are typically solitary or found in small family groups, with males being territorial and marking areas with scent glands. They are crepuscular, active mainly at dawn and dusk to avoid heat, and exhibit wallowing behavior in mud to regulate body temperature and deter parasites. Males may engage in displays of their tusks during conflicts.
Conservation Status
The IUCN Red List classifies the Bola Batu babirusa as Vulnerable due to habitat loss from deforestation and hunting pressure. Population trends are declining, with major threats including human encroachment and fragmentation of their forest habitats.
