Habitat

The Boga inhabits freshwater rivers and streams in South America, particularly in the Paraná, Paraguay, and Uruguay basins. It prefers moderate-flowing waters with sandy or rocky substrates and abundant vegetation. These areas provide cover and food sources in warmer tropical and subtropical regions.

Diet

The Boga primarily feeds on algae, aquatic plants, and detritus, supplemented by insects and small invertebrates. It grazes along the river bottom during the day, using its specialized mouth to scrape food from surfaces. Feeding activity peaks in the morning and late afternoon.

Behavior

The Boga is a schooling fish that forms groups for protection and foraging, typically active during daylight hours. It exhibits territorial behavior during spawning, defending nesting sites in shallow waters. These fish are generally wary and quick to flee from threats, making them challenging to approach.

Conservation Status

Listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
