Habitat
Blue parrotfish primarily inhabit coral reefs and rocky substrates in shallow tropical waters. They are found in the western Atlantic, including the Caribbean Sea and along the coasts of Florida and Brazil, preferring depths of 3 to 25 meters with abundant coral for grazing and shelter.
Diet
Blue parrotfish mainly feed on benthic algae, which they scrape from rocks and dead coral using their strong beak. They occasionally consume small invertebrates or detritus, and feeding activity peaks during the day in shallow reef areas.
Behavior
Blue parrotfish are diurnal and often form schools during the day for feeding and protection, but males can be territorial when defending harems. They exhibit a unique behavior of secreting a mucous cocoon at night to deter predators. During breeding, they may engage in aggressive displays to establish dominance.
Conservation Status
Listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
