Habitat

Blue maomao primarily inhabit rocky reefs and kelp forests in temperate coastal waters. They are commonly found at depths of 5 to 50 meters in the Southwest Pacific, including areas around New Zealand and Australia. These fish prefer areas with strong currents and abundant algae for cover and food.

Diet

Blue maomao feed mainly on algae, small invertebrates like crustaceans, and plankton. They graze on rocky surfaces during the day, using their small mouths to scrape food from substrates. Feeding activity peaks in the morning and late afternoon when they form schools to forage.

Behavior

Blue maomao are highly social fish that form large schools for protection and feeding, often seen swimming in coordinated groups around reefs. They are diurnal, active during daylight hours, and exhibit territorial behavior when defending feeding spots. These fish are known for their agility in evading predators by darting through complex reef structures.
