Habitat

This shrew prefers moist montane forests, grasslands, and shrublands in Central America, ranging from southern Mexico to Panama. It thrives in areas with dense undergrowth and leaf litter for cover, often at elevations between 1,000 and 3,000 meters. It adapts to disturbed habitats like agricultural edges but avoids open or arid areas.

Diet

It primarily consumes insects such as beetles and ants, earthworms, and other small invertebrates like spiders. Feeding is nocturnal and involves rapid, energetic foraging through soil and debris using its sensitive snout. They eat frequently due to their high metabolism, consuming up to their body weight in food daily.

Behavior

These shrews are solitary and territorial, defending small home ranges with scent markings. They are primarily nocturnal, spending the day in burrows or under logs, and exhibit high activity levels while foraging. They communicate through vocalizations and have a rapid, erratic movement pattern to evade predators.

Conservation Status

The IUCN status is Least Concern, with a stable population trend due to its wide distribution. Major threats include habitat loss from deforestation and agricultural expansion.
