Habitat

This species inhabits deep waters on continental slopes and seamounts, typically at depths of 100 to 1000 meters over rocky or muddy substrates. It is found in the Atlantic Ocean, including both eastern and western regions, and prefers cooler temperatures associated with these depths. Geographic preferences include areas near the coastlines of Europe, Africa, and North America.

Diet

The blackbelly rosefish primarily feeds on small fish, crustaceans like shrimp and crabs, and occasionally squid. It is a nocturnal predator that hunts by ambushing prey on the seafloor, using its camouflage to remain hidden. Feeding activity peaks at night when it becomes more mobile in search of food.

Behavior

This fish is generally solitary and sedentary, spending much of the day resting on the bottom and becoming active at night to hunt. It exhibits camouflage behavior by changing its color slightly to blend with rocky substrates, and it shows minimal territorial aggression. Blackbelly rosefish are not known for schooling and prefer to avoid open water.

Conservation Status

Listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
