Habitat
This species inhabits rocky and sandy bottoms in coastal and shelf waters, typically from shallow depths to about 500 meters. It is commonly found in the Northeast Atlantic, Mediterranean Sea, and Black Sea, preferring areas with cover like reefs and crevices.
Diet
The Black scorpionfish is a carnivorous ambush predator that feeds on small fish, crustaceans, and mollusks. It hunts primarily at night or during low light, lying in wait on the seafloor to strike unsuspecting prey.
Behavior
It is a solitary and territorial fish that remains motionless on the bottom to blend with its surroundings. The Black scorpionfish is mostly nocturnal, becoming more active at dusk for feeding, and it uses its venomous spines to deter threats.
