Habitat

This species primarily inhabits wetlands, savannas, and grasslands in sub-Saharan Africa, often near shallow water bodies like marshes and floodplains. They prefer open areas with access to water for foraging and nesting, avoiding dense forests.

Diet

Black crowned cranes feed on insects, seeds, grains, small vertebrates like frogs and lizards, and aquatic plants. They forage by probing the soil or shallow water with their bills, often in groups during the day. Feeding activity peaks in the early morning and late afternoon.

Behavior

These cranes are highly social, forming flocks outside of breeding season and performing elaborate courtship dances involving jumping and wing flapping. They are diurnal, active during the day, and can be territorial around nesting sites. They communicate with loud, trumpeting calls that carry over long distances.

Conservation Status

Listed as Vulnerable by IUCN.
