Overview

The stone capercaillie male has black plumage and white spots, the bill is black and they have red combs above the eye that is most prominent during breeding season. The female is heavily marked on the upper breast with a white pattern on wing-coverts, a black bill, and dark brown eyes with small red combs above the eyes.

Habitat

Forests, mountains, wooded tundra, and plains.

Diet

Conifer needles, buds, flowers, leaves, and shrubs.

Behavior

Both males and females feed in trees, there is no known aggression between females, however, males fight for territory. The females are the sole incubaters and rearers.

Hunting

Typically hunted with .22 Hornet, or 3.5 mm.
