Habitat
Bigmouth sleepers primarily inhabit freshwater rivers, streams, and brackish estuaries in tropical and subtropical regions. They prefer areas with rocky or sandy substrates and plenty of cover like logs or vegetation for hiding. Geographically, they are found in the Western Atlantic from the southern United States to northern South America.
Diet
Bigmouth sleepers are carnivorous, feeding mainly on smaller fish, crustaceans, and insects. They are ambush predators that hunt in low-light conditions, often at night or in murky waters. Their feeding behavior involves lying in wait among vegetation or rocks before striking.
Behavior
Bigmouth sleepers are primarily nocturnal, spending days hidden under rocks or in vegetation and becoming active at night to hunt. They exhibit territorial behavior, particularly during breeding, and are generally solitary outside of spawning periods. They can be aggressive when defending their territory from intruders.
Conservation Status
Listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
