Habitat

The Biak glider inhabits tropical rainforests on Biak Island in Indonesia, preferring areas with tall trees for gliding and dense vegetation for shelter. It is primarily found in lowland and montane forests up to about 800 meters elevation. These habitats provide the necessary resources for feeding and nesting.

Diet

The Biak glider feeds primarily on insects, nectar, sap from trees, and fruits, which it obtains by gliding between food sources. It is nocturnal, foraging at night to avoid predators, and uses its sharp teeth to extract sap or catch insects. Feeding behavior includes licking sap from wounds in tree bark and consuming pollen from flowers.

Behavior

The Biak glider is nocturnal and arboreal, spending its nights gliding between trees in search of food and returning to tree hollows for daytime rest. It lives in small family groups with a dominant male, exhibiting territorial behavior by marking trees with scent glands. Notable behaviors include vocal communications like chirps and barks to maintain social bonds.

Conservation Status

The IUCN status of the Biak glider is Vulnerable due to habitat loss from deforestation and human encroachment. Population trends are declining, with major threats including logging and agricultural expansion on Biak Island.
