Habitat

This species inhabits tropical and subtropical forests, grasslands, and agricultural areas in Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Malaysia, and parts of Myanmar and India. It prefers areas with dense undergrowth for cover and is often found near water sources or in hilly terrain up to 1,500 meters elevation.

Diet

Berdmore's ground squirrel is omnivorous, feeding on fruits, seeds, nuts, insects, and occasionally small vertebrates or bird eggs. It forages primarily on the ground during daylight hours, using its keen senses to locate food in leaf litter and underbrush. Feeding behavior includes caching food for later use.

Behavior

Berdmore's ground squirrel is diurnal and primarily solitary, though pairs or family groups may share burrows. It exhibits territorial behavior by marking areas with scent glands and is an agile climber and digger, creating extensive burrow systems for shelter. Notable behaviors include alarm calls to warn of predators and a habit of sunbathing in clearings.

Conservation Status

The IUCN status is Least Concern, with a stable population trend, though habitat loss due to deforestation and agriculture poses a potential threat.
