Habitat
The Bay cat primarily inhabits lowland and hilly tropical rainforests in Borneo, often in dense undergrowth and near rivers. It prefers areas with thick vegetation up to about 1,000 meters elevation, avoiding open or highly disturbed areas.
Diet
The Bay cat mainly feeds on small mammals like rodents and squirrels, as well as birds and possibly reptiles such as lizards. It is a solitary hunter, typically active at night, using stealth to ambush prey in the forest understory.
Behavior
The Bay cat is solitary and territorial, marking its range with scent and avoiding other individuals except during mating. It is primarily nocturnal, spending the day resting in dense vegetation, and is known for its elusive and secretive nature, making it rarely observed in the wild. These cats are adept climbers and swimmers, which helps them navigate their forested habitats.
Conservation Status
The Bay cat is classified as Endangered by the IUCN Red List due to habitat loss from deforestation and hunting. Population trends are decreasing, with major threats including logging, agriculture, and human encroachment.
