Habitat

The barbel steed inhabits clear, fast-flowing rivers and streams in East Asia, often in areas with rocky or gravelly substrates. It prefers well-oxygenated waters in the middle to lower reaches of rivers, such as the Amur, Mekong, and Ibo Rivers. This species avoids stagnant or polluted environments, thriving in temperate to subtropical climates.

Diet

The barbel steed primarily feeds on benthic invertebrates like insects, crustaceans, and mollusks, which it forages from the river bottom. It also consumes plant matter and detritus, supplementing its diet with algae. Feeding activity peaks at dawn and dusk when it uses its barbels to detect food in low-light conditions.

Behavior

The barbel steed is primarily nocturnal or crepuscular, spending much of the day hiding under rocks or in crevices to avoid predators. It exhibits territorial behavior during spawning, with individuals defending small areas in the riverbed. Generally solitary, it forms loose schools in favorable feeding grounds and is known for its agility in fast currents.
