Habitat
Banded cichlids primarily inhabit slow-moving freshwater rivers, lakes, and flooded forests in the Amazon and Orinoco basins of South America. They prefer warm waters with abundant vegetation and sandy or muddy substrates, often seeking sheltered areas among roots and rocks. These environments provide cover and breeding sites in tropical regions.
Diet
Banded cichlids are omnivorous, feeding on insects, crustaceans, small fish, and plant matter such as algae and detritus. They forage actively during the day, using their mouths to sift through substrate or pick food from surfaces. In the wild, they opportunistically consume whatever is available in their environment.
Behavior
Banded cichlids are generally active during the day and exhibit territorial behavior, especially when breeding, defending nests from intruders. They are often solitary or form pairs, hiding among vegetation to avoid threats. These fish show strong parental care, with both parents guarding eggs and fry.
Conservation Status
Listed as Not Evaluated by IUCN.
