Habitat
This species inhabits coral reefs, rocky crevices, and lagoons in the western Pacific Ocean, including areas around Australia, Japan, and the South China Sea. They prefer shallow to moderate depths of 1 to 30 meters, where they can hide in underwater structures for protection and ambush prey. These environments provide ample shelter and access to food sources.
Diet
The Australian mottled moray primarily feeds on small fish, crustaceans, and cephalopods like octopuses. It employs an ambush hunting strategy, lying in wait in crevices before striking quickly. Feeding activity peaks at night when the eel is most active.
Behavior
This moray eel is primarily nocturnal, spending the day hidden in reef crevices and emerging at night to hunt. It is solitary and territorial, defending its hiding spots aggressively from intruders. They exhibit curious behavior towards divers but can bite if provoked, and they use their strong jaws to manipulate food.
Conservation Status
Listed as Not Evaluated by IUCN.
