Habitat
They primarily inhabit coastal areas and offshore islands along southern Australia, including Tasmania and Victoria. These seals prefer rocky shores, beaches, and shallow marine waters for breeding and resting. They are adaptable but often seek sheltered sites to avoid strong waves.
Diet
Australian fur seals mainly eat fish such as anchovies and sardines, along with squid and crustaceans. They hunt in groups or individually, diving to depths of up to 200 meters, and typically feed at dawn and dusk when prey is most active.
Behavior
These seals are highly social, forming large colonies on land where males establish and defend territories during breeding season. They are agile swimmers, spending much of their time at sea foraging, and exhibit playful behaviors like porpoising out of water. On land, they bask in the sun and can be vocal, using barks and growls for communication.
Conservation Status
The IUCN status is Least Concern, with populations stable or increasing due to conservation efforts, though threats include fishing bycatch and habitat disturbance from human activities.
