Habitat

This species inhabits sandy or muddy seabeds in coastal and shallow waters, often at depths of 10 to 400 meters in the Northeast Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Black Sea. It prefers areas with soft substrates where it can bury itself, avoiding strong currents and rocky environments.

Diet

The Atlantic stargazer primarily feeds on small fish, crustaceans, and polychaetes, using its upward-facing eyes to detect prey from its buried position. It employs an ambush hunting strategy, striking quickly at night when it is most active. Feeding occurs mainly in low-light conditions to avoid detection.

Behavior

The Atlantic stargazer is a solitary, nocturnal fish that buries itself in sand during the day for protection and emerges at night to hunt. It exhibits territorial behavior around its burrow and can deliver a venomous sting if threatened. This species is generally sedentary, relying on camouflage rather than speed to evade predators.

Conservation Status

Listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
