Habitat

This species primarily inhabits tropical and subtropical forests, including deciduous and evergreen woodlands, as well as plantations and urban gardens in South Asia. They prefer areas with plenty of trees for climbing and nesting, ranging from sea level up to about 1,500 meters in elevation.

Diet

The Asian ornate squirrel feeds mainly on fruits, nuts, seeds, and berries, supplemented by insects and occasionally bird eggs or small vertebrates. They are active foragers during the day, often storing food in tree hollows for later use, and can be seen scavenging in both wild and human-altered environments.

Behavior

Asian ornate squirrels are diurnal and highly arboreal, spending most of their time in trees where they build nests from leaves and twigs. They exhibit social behavior, living in small family groups and communicating with chirps, while being territorial around their nesting sites and actively defending against intruders.

Conservation Status

The IUCN status is Least Concern, with a stable population trend due to its wide distribution; major threats include habitat loss from deforestation and urbanization.
