Habitat
Asian golden cats primarily inhabit dense tropical and subtropical forests, including evergreen and deciduous woodlands. They are found in hilly and mountainous regions up to 3,000 meters in Southeast Asia, from the Himalayas to Sumatra and Borneo. These cats prefer areas with thick cover for hunting and resting.
Diet
Asian golden cats mainly eat small mammals like rodents and hares, as well as birds, reptiles, and amphibians. They occasionally consume fruits and insects, exhibiting opportunistic hunting behavior. Feeding typically occurs at night, using stealth and ambush tactics in forested areas.
Behavior
Asian golden cats are primarily solitary and territorial, marking their ranges with scent and vocalizations. They are nocturnal or crepuscular, spending the day resting in dens or trees, and are skilled climbers and swimmers. These cats are elusive and avoid humans, communicating through growls, hisses, and meows during mating or conflicts.
Conservation Status
The IUCN classifies the Asian golden cat as Near Threatened, with populations declining due to habitat loss from deforestation and poaching for the wildlife trade. Major threats include fragmentation of forests and human encroachment.
