Habitat
The armored shrew inhabits montane forests, bamboo thickets, and moist grasslands in East Africa, primarily in Uganda, Kenya, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It prefers elevations between 1,500 and 3,000 meters, where dense undergrowth and leaf litter provide cover and foraging opportunities.
Diet
The armored shrew primarily eats insects, earthworms, and other invertebrates such as beetles and spiders. It forages actively at night, using its sensitive snout and acute hearing to detect prey in soil and leaf litter.
Behavior
Armored shrews are solitary and nocturnal, spending their days hidden in burrows or under logs to avoid predators. They are highly active foragers, moving quickly through undergrowth and exhibiting territorial behavior by scent-marking their ranges. They communicate through high-pitched vocalizations during encounters.
Conservation Status
The IUCN status of the armored shrew is Least Concern, but habitat loss due to deforestation and agriculture threatens local populations, with a suspected declining trend.
