Habitat

Aquatic Genets primarily inhabit dense tropical rainforests and wetlands in Central Africa, especially along rivers, swamps, and flooded forests in the Congo Basin. They prefer areas with abundant water sources for hunting and shelter, avoiding open or dry terrains. Their range includes countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, and Cameroon.

Diet

Aquatic Genets mainly consume fish, frogs, and other aquatic prey, which they catch by wading or diving in shallow waters. They also eat insects, small mammals, birds, and fruits, often foraging along riverbanks. Feeding activity peaks at night when they are most active.

Behavior

Aquatic Genets are solitary and nocturnal, spending their days hidden in dense vegetation or tree hollows near water. They are excellent swimmers and climbers, using these skills to hunt and escape predators, and they mark territories with scent glands. They exhibit territorial behavior, with individuals avoiding overlap except during mating.

Conservation Status

The Aquatic Genet is classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN due to habitat loss from deforestation and pollution. Population trends are decreasing, with major threats including logging, mining, and human encroachment in Central African rainforests.
