Habitat
This species inhabits the tropical rainforests of southeastern Madagascar, particularly in the Anosy region. It prefers dense, humid forests with plenty of trees for arboreal living and is often found in areas with undergrowth for shelter. Elevation ranges from sea level to about 800 meters.
Diet
The Anosy mouse lemur primarily eats insects such as beetles and moths, along with fruits, nectar, and occasionally small vertebrates or gum from trees. It forages nocturnally, using its keen senses to locate food in the forest canopy. Feeding behavior includes leaping between branches to catch prey.
Behavior
Anosy mouse lemurs are primarily solitary or form small family groups, with individuals maintaining small territories marked by scent. They are strictly nocturnal, spending the day in tree hollows or leaf nests and becoming active at dusk to forage and socialize. Notable behaviors include vocal communication with high-pitched calls and torpor during cooler periods to conserve energy. They are agile climbers, using their tails for balance while navigating the forest canopy.
Conservation Status
The IUCN status of the Anosy mouse lemur is Endangered, with populations declining due to habitat loss from deforestation and agriculture. Major threats include fragmentation of rainforests and potential impacts from climate change.
