Habitat
This species inhabits arid and semi-arid regions, including deserts, steppes, and grasslands in northern China and Mongolia. They prefer areas with loose soil for burrowing and are often found at elevations up to 2,000 meters.
Diet
Alashan ground squirrels primarily eat seeds, grasses, and roots, supplemented by insects and other plant matter. They forage during the day, often storing food in burrows for winter hibernation. Feeding peaks in the morning and late afternoon when temperatures are milder.
Behavior
These squirrels are diurnal and live in colonies with complex burrow systems, exhibiting territorial behavior around their dens. They are highly social, communicating with vocalizations and engaging in play, but they hibernate during the coldest months. Males may fight for mating rights, and they are agile burrowers to escape threats.
Conservation Status
The IUCN classifies the Alashan ground squirrel as Least Concern, with a stable population trend, though habitat loss from desertification poses a potential threat.
