Habitat
Agile gibbons primarily inhabit tropical rainforests in Southeast Asia, including regions of Malaysia, Thailand, and Sumatra. They prefer dense, tall canopies in both lowland and montane forests, where they can access food and avoid ground predators.
Diet
Agile gibbons mainly consume ripe fruits such as figs and berries, supplemented by leaves, flowers, and insects for protein. They exhibit selective feeding behavior, foraging in the upper canopy during early morning and late afternoon to avoid the heat of the day.
Behavior
Agile gibbons live in small, monogamous family groups of 2-6 individuals, including a breeding pair and their offspring. They are diurnal and highly territorial, using loud, complex vocal duets to communicate and defend their territory. These gibbons are agile brachiators, spending most of their time swinging through the forest canopy.
Conservation Status
The IUCN classifies the agile gibbon as Endangered, with populations declining due to habitat loss from deforestation and hunting. Major threats include fragmentation of rainforest habitats and the illegal pet trade.
