Habitat
This species primarily inhabits wet sclerophyll forests, woodlands, and heathy areas in southeastern Australia, including parts of Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland. It prefers dense undergrowth and areas with fallen logs or rocks for shelter.
Diet
The agile antechinus mainly feeds on insects such as beetles, ants, and spiders, as well as other invertebrates like earthworms. It forages actively at night on the ground or in low vegetation, using its sharp teeth to catch and consume prey.
Behavior
Agile antechinus are solitary and nocturnal, spending the day in nests made of leaves and bark in tree hollows or logs. They are territorial, marking areas with scent and engaging in aggressive chases if intruders approach. Males exhibit a unique behavior where they die shortly after the intense mating period due to stress and exhaustion.
Conservation Status
The IUCN status of the agile antechinus is Least Concern, with a stable population trend. Major threats include habitat loss from logging and urban development, as well as predation by introduced species.
