Habitat
This species inhabits the dry deciduous forests and gallery forests of western Madagascar, preferring areas with dense vegetation for cover. They are found at elevations up to 800 meters, often near rivers or in fragmented forest patches.
Diet
AEECL's sportive lemur primarily feeds on leaves, fruits, and flowers, with a preference for the foliage of tamarind and fig trees. They are nocturnal foragers, spending nights climbing trees to browse, and may consume insects occasionally for additional protein.
Behavior
This lemur is solitary and nocturnal, spending most of its time in trees where it moves slowly and deliberately. It exhibits territorial behavior by marking trees with scent glands and vocalizing to ward off intruders, though it avoids direct confrontation. Males and females have overlapping home ranges but generally live alone except during mating.
Conservation Status
AEECL's sportive lemur is classified as Endangered by the IUCN due to habitat loss from deforestation and agriculture. Population trends are declining rapidly, with major threats including hunting and fragmentation of forest habitats.
